Is Berber Carpet The Right Choice For You?

The Good and The Bad

If you’re looking for a carpet that is durable, easy to maintain and cost efficient, you’re probably thinking that berber carpet is the right choice for you. However, you’d probably like to have all the facts before making a purchase. Here we’ll look at the pros and cons of berber.

The Pros:

It’s Cost Effective:

Berber has a reputation for being less expensive than other residential carpet styles. This is generally because many berbers are made from olefin, which is less expensive than nylon or wool. Additionally, berbers are less expensive to manufacture. All carpets begin as a loop which is usually sheared off at the top. Since berber remains in a loop construction, this part of the manufacturing process is skipped.

It’s Durable:

Carpet is stronger in it’s looped form than in a cut pile which makes berber, by it’s very nature, stronger. Keep in mind, however, that to test this properly, you’d have to compare the same quality (ie: low, mid or high) quality carpet to each other. A high quality Saxony will be more durable than a low quality berber.

It’s Low Maintenance:

Like it’s durability, berber is easier to keep clean because of it’s looped construction. Dirt and spills tend to sit on top of the carpet as opposed to sinking into the fiber which is what generally happens with a cut pile.

The Cons:

It Might Snag:

We’ve established that berber comes in a looped constructiion. Because of this, there is a possibly of something getting caught in a loop and pulling it from it’s backing. Though it would take a lot of force to pull a loop out, it could happen by dragging something heavy across the carpet.

Pets:

Again, with the looped construction, be mindful that pets have claws. The loops won’t hurt your pet, but if you’ve got a cat who likes to sharpen their claws they might find the loop an appealing spot to do it on.

Vacuum:

Berbers are fussy about vacuums and the use of a power head or beater bar could potentially pull a loop of carpet from it’s backing. However, if you avoid using these attachments, vacuuming is more of a caution than a con.
