What is hardwood?

Hardwood flooring refers to flooring made from solid wood, typically harvested from trees such as oak, maple, or cherry. It’s renowned for its durability, natural beauty, and timeless appeal.

Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of wood, while engineered hardwood consists of multiple layers with a solid wood veneer on top and a plywood base. Engineered hardwood offers enhanced durability and moisture resistance, making it ideal for areas with fluctuating temperatures or humidity—perfect for Canadian homes.

Engineered wood flooring is more resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations, making it suitable for areas like basements and kitchens. It also tends to be more affordable than solid hardwood.

Yes, both solid hardwood and engineered wood flooring can be installed over concrete subfloors with proper preparation and installation techniques.

Hardwood flooring is typically installed by either nailing, stapling, or gluing the boards to the subfloor, depending on the type of hardwood and the installation method chosen.

Engineered wood flooring can be installed using various methods, including floating, glue-down, or nail-down techniques, depending on the specific product and subfloor conditions.

Yes, engineered hardwood is generally more suitable for high-moisture areas like basements or bathrooms due to its enhanced resistance to moisture compared to solid hardwood.

Yes, hardwood flooring, including engineered wood, can be installed over radiant heating systems, but it’s essential to follow manufacturer guidelines and use appropriate installation methods.

Regular maintenance for hardwood flooring includes sweeping or vacuuming to remove debris, promptly cleaning spills, using felt pads on furniture legs to prevent scratches, and periodic refinishing as needed.

Common finishes for hardwood flooring include polyurethane, oil-based finishes, water-based finishes, and wax. Each finish offers different levels of durability and aesthetic appeal.

With proper care and maintenance, solid hardwood flooring can last for generations. Engineered wood flooring typically has a lifespan of 20-30 years, depending on usage and maintenance.

Hardwood flooring sourced from responsibly managed forests or reclaimed wood is considered environmentally friendly. Engineered wood flooring often utilizes fast-growing wood species and reduces waste compared to solid hardwood.

Factors affecting the cost of hardwood flooring installation include the type of wood, installation method, subfloor condition, and any additional materials or services required, such as moisture barriers or trim.

While solid hardwood is not recommended for below-grade areas due to moisture concerns, certain types of engineered wood flooring with moisture-resistant cores can be suitable for basements and similar spaces.

Fluctuations in humidity levels can cause hardwood flooring to expand or contract, leading to gaps, cupping, or buckling. Maintaining consistent indoor humidity levels between 30-50% helps minimize these issues.

Yes, alternatives to hardwood flooring include laminate flooring, luxury vinyl planks (LVP), and ceramic or porcelain tile flooring, each offering unique benefits and aesthetic options.

If we have the materials in stock, we can schedule installation as fast as the next day, and with over $1,000,000 of in-stock inventory, next-day installations are common. If we need to order your hardwood in, we advise that it may take 7 to 10 business days for delivery and installation.

Many hardwood installations take 1 day or less, but for very large orders it may run into a second day.

All pictures/decor should be off of your walls and any shelves and/or flat surfaces should be clear.  You’ll want to take anything breakable out of the room. A lot of people do not remove pictures on walls but if you choose to leave them we will not be responsible if they fall. Typically if they are properly hung it is not an issue.

Yes, professional installation is recommended to ensure the best fit and appearance of your hardwood, as well as to maximize its lifespan.

That depends on what type of flooring that is currently there and the condition of that flooring. We can’t install hardwood over carpet but we can install hardwood over vinyl or hard surface assuming that the flooring is in good shape and doesn’t require any major repairs.  If this is something you’re considering, have your sales rep check if it’s possible.

Typically there is no waiting time before the hardwood can be walked on as most hardwood installations are completed without the use of adhesives.

We include the removal of the old flooring and moving of furniture on our quotes. However, if you choose to do those tasks yourself please have the areas completely empty and ready for flooring upon the arrival of the installation team.

You can request a free quote by contacting us through our website form or by phone.  We will schedule a consultation to assess your needs and provide you with a free quote.

What is carpet?

Carpet is a  floor covering made from various fibers, including wool, nylon, polyester, or polypropylene, which are woven or tufted into a backing material. It is used to provide comfort, insulation, and aesthetic appeal in homes and commercial spaces.

Carpet installation includes measuring the area, preparing the subfloor, laying the carpet, stretching it, trimming excess, and finishing with baseboards and transitions.

Consider factors such as fiber type, pile height, color, texture, durability, and your lifestyle when choosing carpet for your home. Visiting carpet stores and consulting with experts can help you make an informed decision.

You can find carpet stores near you by searching online directories, map applications, or asking for recommendations. You can also search for “carpet stores near me” online for immediate results.

The cost of new carpet installation and replacement varies based on several factors, including the size of the area, the quality of the carpet, additional materials required, and labor costs. On average, you can expect to pay between $2 to $6 per square foot for installation. For a more accurate estimate, it’s best to get quotes from multiple sources to compare prices.

The time required for professional carpet installation depends on factors like the area size, complexity, and installer availability. It can typically range from a few hours to a day.

Some professional carpet installers offer furniture moving services as part of their installation package, while others may charge an additional fee for this service.

Common carpet fibers include wool, nylon, polyester, and polypropylene, each with unique characteristics in terms of durability, stain resistance, and comfort.

Carpet padding provides cushioning, insulation, and support for the carpet. It helps extend the life of the carpet and improves comfort. It’s generally recommended for most installations.

Measure the length and width of the room, including any alcoves or irregularities. Add extra for seam allowances and wastage, and consult with professionals for accurate measurements.

Loop pile carpet has loops of yarn, providing durability and texture, while cut pile carpet has the loops cut, offering a plush, soft feel.

In some cases, carpet can be installed over existing flooring, but it depends on the condition and type of the existing floor. Consult with professionals for advice.

Many carpet manufacturers offer warranties on their products, and some installers may provide warranties on their installation work. Review warranty information before purchasing.

While it’s possible to install carpet in these areas, it’s not recommended due to moisture and potential staining. Consider alternative flooring options such as tile, vinyl, or laminate.

Carpet tiles, also known as carpet squares or planks, are modular sections of carpeting that are typically square or rectangular. They provide a flexible and versatile flooring solution, allowing for easy installation and design creativity. Unlike traditional carpet rolls, which cover large areas in one continuous piece, carpet tiles can be installed individually. This makes them easier to replace if damaged and offers more options for mixing patterns and colors to create custom designs.

Advantages of carpet tiles include easy installation, flexibility in design, ability to replace individual tiles, suitability for DIY projects, and durability in high-traffic areas.

Yes, carpet tiles are suitable for both residential and commercial settings, including homes, offices, retail spaces, and hospitality environments.

Regular vacuuming and spot cleaning are typically sufficient to maintain carpet tiles. Some carpet tiles are also designed to be removable for easier cleaning or replacement.

Yes, carpet tiles are suitable for areas with heavy furniture. However, it’s essential to use furniture coasters or pads to distribute the weight evenly and prevent indentations in the tiles.

Yes, carpet tiles can be installed on stairs, but special stair nosing may be required to finish the edges and provide a finished look. It’s recommended to consult with a professional installer for stair installations.

If we have the materials in stock, we can schedule installation as fast as the next day and with over $1,000,000 of in stock inventory next-day installations are common. If we need to order the flooring it may take 7 to 10 business days for delivery and installation.

99% of LVT installations take 1 day or less, but for very large orders it may run into a second day.

Yes, professional installation is recommended to ensure the best fit and appearance of your new vinyl flooring. It is also recommended so that there will be no issues with the manufacturer’s warranty on the product.

That depends on what type of flooring that is currently there and the condition of that flooring. We can’t install vinyl over carpet with underpad but we can ususally install over some glued down carpets as well as hard surfaces. Your design consultant will check what is possible.

Typically there is no waiting time before the vinyl flooring can be walked on but for glued down vinyl flooring light traffic is recommended for the first 24 hours.

We include removal of the old flooring and moving of furniture on our quotes but if you choose to do those tasks yourself please have the areas completely empty and ready for flooring upon arrival of the installation team.

You can request a free quote by contacting us through our website form or by phone.  We will schedule a consultation to assess your needs and provide you with a free quote.

Can laminate flooring be installed in wet areas, such as bathrooms?

While laminate flooring is resistant to moisture, it is not recommended for high-moisture areas such as bathrooms. Extended exposure to water can cause swelling and damage to the particle board in the flooring. Consider alternative flooring options like vinyl or tile for these areas.

The lifespan of laminate flooring depends on factors such as quality, maintenance, and foot traffic. On average, laminate flooring can last 15-25 years with proper care and maintenance.

Yes, in many cases, laminate flooring can be installed over existing flooring, such as vinyl or hardwood. However, it is essential to ensure that the existing floor is in good condition, level, and free from moisture issues. Laminate flooring cannot be installed over soft surfaces, such as carpet.

We offer a wide range of laminate options from all of the industry’s leading suppliers and manufacturers including Mohawk, Fuzion Flooring, Mannington, and many more!

Our typical turnaround time from estimate to installation is around 14 business days. However, we stock many of our laminate products, so in some cases, you could have your new flooring installed within 3 or 4 days.

We have a 10,000 sq. ft office/warehouse space in Burlington, but it’s not set up as a showroom. If you’d like to see laminate samples or get advice from one of our flooring experts, one of our sales reps will gladly come to you.

Unlike traditional brick-and-mortar flooring stores, we schedule appointments for our sales representatives to visit your home, bring laminate  samples, take measurements, and provide you with an estimate. We’re Ontario’s original Shop-From-Home laminate flooring store!

Yes, you can mop laminate flooring, but make sure to use a damp mop. Avoid using excess water, as too much moisture can cause the laminate to warp or swell.

If we have the materials in stock, we can schedule installation as fast as the next day and with over $1,000,000 of in stock inventory next-day installations are common. If we need to order your laminate, we advise that it may take 7 to 10 business days for delivery and installation.

The majority of laminate installations take 1 day or less, but for very large orders it may run into a second day.

Yes, professional installation is recommended to ensure the best fit and appearance of your laminate, as well as to maximize its lifespan.
